.KEY MESSAGES...
* Mainly dry conditions and above normal temperatures will continue
through Memorial Day.
* Gusty winds and cooler temperatures will spread across the
region beginning Tuesday.
* Light showers are expected across the southern Great Basin
midweek as a low pressure system sits over central Nevada.
&&
.DISCUSSION...through next weekend.
Mostly sunny and warm conditions prevail across the region this
afternoon. We are expecting a few very light showers to develop
with the afternoon heating across the Sierra region as well as the
Arizona strip, though none of the shower activity is expected to
be of much impact. On Monday, a weak low pressure center will move
into Arizona with a few light showers again expected across
Northwest Arizona, mainly east and north of Kingman and across the
Arizona Strip. Elsewhere, dry and warm conditions will continue
for Memorial Day.
By Tuesday, a fairly deep low pressure system will drop into the
Great Basin from the PacNW. The approach of this low and the
tightening pressure gradient will lead to gusty conditions across
much of the region, especially the Western Mojave Desert and parts
of southern Nevada. In coordination with our neighboring California
offices, went ahead and issued a wind advisory for the Western
Mojave Desert near Barstow for Tue-Thu, and additional wind
headlines will likely be required for areas further east as
confidence in the timing details increases. In addition to the
gusty winds, temperatures will begin to decline Tuesday, and
especially Wednesday-Thursday as the low remains in close
proximity to the region and subdues heights. As the low weakens
late in the week, temperatures will moderate and return to above
normal by the weekend.
In addition to the gusty winds and cooler temps, a few showers are
expected across the Southern Great Basin and Sierra region
Wednesday and Thursday as the low sits nearly overhead.
Precipitation amounts are generally expected to be light, but a
few stronger cores could produce lightning and brief downpours
given the steep lapse rates and cool air aloft. The low will
weaken by the weekend with precipitation chances ending.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 00Z Forecast
Package...Southeasterly winds with gusts to around 20KT will
continue until sunset, with gusts expected to diminish quickly
thereafter. Winds will remain somewhat elevated during the
evening, around 10-12KT, before becoming light overnight. By early
Monday afternoon, winds will increase to 10-12KT with gusts to
18-20KT thereafter through the end of the period, with southerly
winds Monday afternoon shifting to the southwest around sunset.
VFR conditions will continue with FEW-SCT clouds at or above
15kft.
For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...For the 00Z Forecast Package...Southerly to
southeasterly winds gusting to 20-25KT will continue through
sunset, diminishing thereafter with wind speeds expected to drop
under 10KT for most locations overnight. An exception to this is
across the western Mojave Desert, including KDAG, where winds will
shift to the west by sunset, with speeds increasing to 10-15KT and
gusts to 20-25KT thereafter. By Monday afternoon, another round
of southerly to southeasterly winds is expected elsewhere,
gusting to 20-25KT through the end of the forecast period. VFR
conditions will prevail, with cloud bases at or above 12kft. There
remains a 10-20% chance of showers/thunderstorms over the Sierra
and portions of northwestern Arizona through this evening with
the primary impacts being erratic gusty winds and occasional
lightning strikes. There is a very low chance for KBIH in the
northern Owens Valley to be affected by these winds this evening.
